Back to Basics
That's what Ohrwert does. Under his nickname, this guy goes back to the bare bones of dub techno. Because that's what Lost Reduct is : dub techno in it's purest form. Nothing more, nothing less. Since the Basic Channel releases, many people followed Moritz and Mark in their vision of techno invaded by echoes, reverbs and lazy synths. We had, troughout the years, many examples of this influence on the techno scene with artists such as DeepChord, Pole, Kit Clayton and mainly the Chain Rection school of thought. But after a while, artists began to separate from the BC influence and did their own style.
What Ohrwert does is coming straight to the essence of the genre. Take the first track for example, Parallax : a phased white noise, quickly followed by a superb crispy-sounding groovy synth line which stretches over the whole track. The pattern is left totally unchanged but the sound is filtered, flangered, delayed and modulated. Add a simple 4/4 classic techno drum pattern with a punchy kick drum, dry hihats and you got it.
What makes the whole thing is that here, it is really well executed, and that Ohrwert manages to make you feel you're somewhere else, far away, for the entire duration of the track. This is daydreaming goodness, and it makes you forget about everything else.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is dub techno.
And it is great. A must-download.
